APR ECU Upgrade Stages
Stage I: This is a simple upgrade that requires no engine hardware modifications and adds substantial horsepower. For example, APR Stage I Software Upgrades for a Mk7 VW GTI 2.0TSI provides gains from 78-97hp and 95-110 ft lbs or torque over factory output. Even greater gains can be had from upgrading the intake, intercooler, down pipe or cat-back exhaust.
Stage II: This is a more aggressive tune for the enthusiast looking to make major horsepower and torque gains. Stage II requires one hardware upgrade -a downpipe, which is also offered by APR (depending on the application.) The Stage II APR Software Upgrade offers up to 95-110HP and 176 ft lbs throughout the powerband for the Mk7 GTI 2.0TSI. Again, additional hardware upgrades will increase horsepower and torque gains.
APR offers different Software Upgrades for 91, 93 and 100 Octane based on the fuel grade you plan to run and what is available in your area.
Is There a Risk? Not if your vehicle is maintained properly.
Software Upgrades are an incredibly reliable way to increase horsepower and torque. That is why it is often the first performance upgrade made to a car. We've even had customers drive from the dealership with a to our shop with a brand new car to receive software upgrades on several occasions! With software upgrades, you are not changing factory hardware (aside from the necessary downpipe upgrade for Stage II), you are simply optimizing the engine management system to take full advantage of the engine's capabilities.
Some clients worry that a vehicle's components will not be able to handle the increase in horsepower. From our experience, we have never had issues with Software Upgrades made on a vehicle that is well-maintained. However, if your car has a pre-existing issue, a software upgrade will amplify the issue.
For example, if you have loose clamps and fittings in your intercooler system, increasing boost pressure through software upgrades will be a sure-fire way to create boost leaks. Similarly, if your clutch is worn out and beginning to slip, you can expect to have to replace it sooner.
